"All God Worshippers Are Mad a little book of sanity" seeks to demonstrate in a logical and common sense manner that the fundamental beliefs held by all monotheists are incomprehensible and lunatic. The method employed is to take the obscurantist vocabulary of monotheism and translate it into plain language. In doing so, the book attempts to show that god worshippers themselves do not understand the things they claim to believe and by which they live their lives. For the reader who believes in god, this polemical little volume may help them to understand why secularists get so frustrated and infuriated when in debate with god worshippers. For the secularist, this book is a reminder that not everyone is susceptible to reasoned argument. The reminder is a timely one. A clear understanding of the irrationality of monotheism is something which matters urgently when confronted by the global rise of religious fascism. What is said in this little book will no doubt be found impolite and overly-provocative by those authoritarian people within the politically correct establishment who conflate morality with niceness. They will probably utter the familiar refrain that we ought not to denigrate other people’s deeply and sincerely held beliefs. Instead we should live in a permanent state of apology for the crime of having minds of our own. But religions are no more above criticism than any other ideologies. They have no entitlement to a privileged status. Besides which, large numbers of god worshippers feel free to denigrate and insult everyone else’s deeply and sincerely held beliefs, so why should they have special permission to be hypocrites? This is a short book of around 100 pages. It IS excellent as many reviewers have noted so I don't need to repeat all that. However, I notice a few of the reviewers object to the end of the book which is almost completely devoted to Islamism. While that seems to be an strong focus of worry of this author is is NOT inappropriate in this book, nor does it go off the rails. The title of the book is "All God Worshipers are Mad' after all. Obviously the author strongly objects to the political correctness police who participate in and cheer on heaps of abuse on Christians, but turn around and shout down as Islamaphobes anyone who has the temerity to criticize Islamism. Which after all is and IDEA in someone's head. It is not synonymous with "Muslim". There are a number of statements in this part of the book that express his distaste with what has been termed the "regressive left" who have illiberal views. Yes that is an expression of his political ideas but the overwhelming majority of the text in this part of the book is simply being highly critical of the IDEA and the PRACTICE of Islamism. He makes a number of legitimate points in this part of the book that instead of dismissing as political (yes some of that exists here) all of this part of the book the reviewers would do well to actually address the points he makes. I DID find some of this last part tiresome but I do not dismiss the whole of it for that reason. I can throw out the bathwater without throwing out the baby.

So maybe 80% of the book is excellent and 20% goes off the rails as one reviewer described it. However, IMO 80% of the 20% is substantive and relevant to the whole point of the book - therefore 5 stars (or maybe 4.8 to be exact). Finally I find it interesting that these reviewers may be making his exact point - any criticism of Islam the religion and Islamism the political arm of it is out of bounds while the same type of criticism of Christianity the religion and political fundamentalism as the political arm of it deserving of continual abuse. They both deserve it and for the same reason.

All God Worshippers Are Mad a little book of sanity J P Tate 9781500568740 Books Reviews

This is a good read. Couldn't have put it together better. I've never really thought about god worshipers being insane. But it really does make sense that they would be since they are believing in something that's totally fictitious as we know it to be to this day. I do believe tho, that some need to believe in a deity so they may have a purpose in life and to keep them on the str8rt and narrow. After all, if you have been brainwashed all your life to think the way of the bible than I suppose it's like a drug addiction. I know several people who would break down if they proved all their mystical and make believe literature was just campfire stories. Thanks JP Tate.
JP Tate is certainly cogent and makes excellent points about how meaningless most religious concepts are when you break them down and demand a precise, logical explanation. High marks for this.
He reserves his harshest criticism for Islam, clearly concerned about the rise of the Muslim population in the UK and their insistence on religious not civil law. He offers no simple solutions to such a complex problem, however, as he himself states that there is almost never any such thing. The more the UK, or any country so concerned, takes harsh steps to deal with religious extremists, the more that country would have to embrace fascism, the very thing to which Tate compares Islam.
To cite one example, Tate of course staunchly defends free speech, essentially absent in Muslim countries. But he is angered when Islamic demonstrators cry 'Democracy go to hell,' and the like. Well, uh, that is what free speech is. The right of a person to make statements that most of us consider ludicrous or even insulting.
Perhaps Tate can write another book focused on how countries should best deal with religious extremists in their midst. .
I found the first 18 chapters of this book mostly fantastic. Early in the book, Tate clearly and unflinchingly deconstructs what monotheism means (or is purported to mean) and how these beliefs are incoherent and cognitively illogical. He then goes on to show that if the tenets of monotheism are held to be true, the result is reverence for a deity which commits appalling atrocities, which is inconsistent with protestations that religion is about love and comfort. For example, one of my favorite points from Chapter 15 "God Worship is Obscene" "That thousands of years of hardship and misery were not the unlucky consequence of our natural human condition but instead had been calculatingly engineered by god in pursuit of unspecified purposes of its own is an idea that is so appallingly and unforgivably obscene, so unspeakably vile, that it really ought to hold the status of the most obscene thought that anyone ever had.”

Unfortunately, after making a watertight case that monotheism is incoherent, inconsistent, illogical, immoral, and obscene, for some reason Tate veers off into a bizarre political diatribe. The first hint of this is in Chapter 16, “Everything is God’s Fault”, in which he correctly points out that if there is an omnipotent being running the show, surely that being should be held accountable for the negative things that happen in the world. He chooses to illustrate this point by quipping “God is like a feminist; even though they are in power, everything bad that happens is always someone else’s fault. God and feminists; they never hold themselves accountable.” Wait, what? I realize that I am in the US and Tate is apparently in the UK; perhaps there is a feminist state there of which I am unaware, or perhaps Tate does not understand what feminism means. I was willing to give this odd pronouncement a pass, but then Tate proceeds to pontificate on his personal political views, which in addition to being (in my opinion) somewhat inconsistent, are completely out of place in comparison to the initial crystal clear logical argument which comprises the bulk of the book.

In chapter 19 Tate chooses to describe at length why he feels that “Islamism is the New Fascism.” Certainly there are some accurate points here regarding the totalitarian nature of theocracy (which would go for any theocracy, not just an Islamic one, but never mind) but he chooses to blame “western multiculturalism” for allowing the “mass immigration” of Muslims into Europe, to which he attributes the rise of political demands for Shari’ah law. Again, I am not in Europe so perhaps things are different there, but here in the US we have rabid rightwing presidential candidates calling for banning immigration by Muslims, forcing them to wear identifiers, etc. I am not seeing much call for Shari’ah law here in the US, but calls for intolerance to anyone who appears Arab are plenty visible. He also speaks favorably of the US as “the world’s policeman” and dismisses suggestions that American military action is based on the pursuit of oil and power rather than protecting human rights.

It is certainly Tate’s right to disagree with feminism, multiculturalism (whatever he chooses to believe that means) and to apologize for American imperialism, if he sees fit. However, including this odd political diatribe at the end of his logical deconstruction of monotheism severely undermines the impact of his argument. His choice to rail against feminists and “multiculturalists” (which I took to mean liberals and leftists) is an unfortunate one as well, as it is far more likely that his atheist argument will resonate with liberals and leftists, rather than those who feel threatened by feminism and immigration, who tend (in my experience) to be the most unthinkingly religious. I would much prefer he had kept this book focused on the premise that god-worshippers are mad and deferred his political manifesto to a separate book.
